Making money with Bukisa
I just stumbled upon an interesting site, that I thought some folks out there might find interesting.
The site is called Bukisa, it is a rather lengthy knowledgebase of tips, how-tos, videos and more. Plus you can sign up as a Bukisa publisher, share your knowledge and earn a bit of money on the side.

Oh, You Wanted "Awesome" Edition
From the Coding Horror Blog
We recently upgraded our database server to 48 GB of memory -- because hardware is cheap, and programmers are expensive.
Imagine our surprise, then, when we rebooted the server and saw only 32 GB of memory available in Windows Server 2008. Did we install the memory wrong? No, the BIOS screen reported the full 48 GB of memor

All Abstractions Are Failed Abstractions
From the Coding Horror Blog
In programming, abstractions are powerful things:
Joel Spolsky has an article in which he states
All non-trivial abstractions, to some degree, are leaky.
This is overly dogmatic - for example, bignum classes are exactly the same regardless of the native integer multiplication. Ignoring that, this statement is essentia

Another Ugly Building: 621 King St.
This building is just run down. It has been renovated many times, badly. They can’t even be bothered to paint the siding, which has been mismatched since the ice storm of 1998. If you look in the windows of the upper floors, you can see that some of them have been boarded up from [...]

FunkyThoughts: Why my facebook shows me as agnostic
From the Page:
A while back, I had a rather interesting dicussion with a person on facebook regarding an assumption that was made about my "religion status" which I have set to agnostic Specifically, there was some confusion that his meant I was "atheist", which is a completely different term alltogether.

Scaling Up vs. Scaling Out: Hidden Costs
In My Scaling Hero, I described the amazing scaling story of plentyoffish.com. It's impressive by any measure, but also particularly relevant to us because we're on the Microsoft stack, too. I was intrigued when Markus posted this recent update:
Last monday we upgraded our core database server after a power outage knocked the site offline. I haven't

Do opinions of people change after they die?
credit: WTL photos When someone dies does it change how we feel about them? Do the things that bug us and irritate us about other people always seem insignificant after they are gone? I was reminded of this thought when reading Lisa Marie Presley’s blog article on Michael Jackson’s death. Lisa says: After the Divorce, I spent a [...] Re

Handicapping a Hero
There once was a village on a hill. It was the envy of the region. Its prosperity was only matched by its generosity. The values of the village centered on honesty and hard work. As long as honesty and hard work continued, free enterprise flourished.
Over time some realized that others were "more prosperousâ than they [...]

Issac Asimov - Threats to Humanity
Came across this interesting video aparantly from Issac Asimov around 1989, when he was asked to talk about what he thought would be an âimportantâs scientific topic.
Can We Save Earth For Humans? Asked and answered in 1988 by Isaac Asimov. Was he prophetic? Twenty years later it seems...

How to send SMS through phone modem (AT Commands)
In general, there are two ways to send SMS messages from a computer / PC to a mobile phone:
Connect a mobile phone or GSM/GPRS modem to a computer / PC.
Then use the computer / PC and AT commands to instruct the mobile phone or GSM/GPRS modem to send SMS messages.
Connect the computer / PC to the SMS center (SMSC) or SMS gateway of a wireless carrier or SMS service provider. Then send SMS messages using a protocol / interface supported by the SMSC or SMS gateway.

We Done Been ... Framed!
In my previous post, Url Shorteners: Destroying the Web Since 2002, I mentioned that one of the "features" of the new generation of URL shortening services is to frame the target content.
Digg is one of the most popular sites to implement this strategy. Here's how it works. If you're logged in to Digg, every target link you click from Digg is a shorte

Fredericton Transit on-board webcam is live
It launched Jul 14th 2009, but so far has only shown the outside of the transit garage. It is apparently on fleet number 8073, but is probably not on a fixed route.
You can see it by clicking http://www.fredericton.ca/en/TransitWebcam.asp You'll then need to find the red bus icon and click on it.
Here's a screenshot in case it doesn't work for you:
